Hawks' Preseason Begins
The return to the hardwood is officially underway as both the Men’s and Women’s West Yorkshire Hawks National League teams launched their preseason training this week. With fresh faces, fired-up energy, and big goals for the year ahead, it was clear from day one that the neon and navy are ready to fly.
On Wednesday night, the Men’s team stepped back onto the court at the University of Huddersfield for their first official session of the 2025/26 campaign. A mix of returning talent and new recruits brought a renewed intensity and hunger as they began shaking off the summer rust in preparation for the season opener.
Head Coach Danny Byrne was full of praise after the session: “It was good to be back on the floor with the guys. I felt a real feeling of purpose to this team and the new guys straight away matched the level and if anything wanted to push it further. I can’t wait to see what they are able to deliver this season.”
The men tip off their campaign on the road against Tameside Vikings on Saturday 27th September, setting the tone for what promises to be an electrifying season.
Thursday evening marked a historic moment as the Women’s team began their preseason journey—with many new players taking to the floor together for the first time. With ambition in the air and a strong sense of pride, the team is determined to make their mark as they enter National League women’s basketball.
Player/Coach Millie Oates shared her excitement: “It was an exciting moment. We have been working towards this for a few months now and our first session made it all feel a lot more real. It was clear how excited the team are to step up a level and we are all determined to represent West Yorkshire proudly.”
Their first challenge comes on the road as they head south to face Oaklands Wolves on Saturday 27th September.
Both squads will continue their intense preseason prep with eyes firmly set on their respective home openers at the Hawks Nest. The Women’s team will face Trafford Mystics on Saturday 4th October with a 6:30pm tip-off, while the Men’s team will host Derby Trailblazers on Saturday 11th October, also tipping off at 6:30pm.
