Hawks Off To Winning Start in 2024

In a thrilling showdown to tip off 2024, the West Yorkshire Hawks soared to an impressive 97-79 victory over the Sheffield Elite.

The Hawks wasted no time asserting themselves, storming out of the gate with a blistering offensive display that saw them take a commanding 30-18 lead at the close of the first quarter.

However, the Elite refused to back down, showcasing their resilience in the second quarter. Battling back hard, they managed to swing the momentum in their favor, heading into halftime with a narrow 50-48 lead, thanks to an impressive resurgence.

Yet, the Hawks regrouped during the break, rekindling their offense and defensive resolve in the third quarter. With a renewed sense of control, they wrestled the lead back, finishing the third quarter with a 73-67 advantage.

The final quarter was all about the West Yorkshire Hawks as they charged towards an 18 point win.  Rob Donaldson, put on an absolute clinic, leading the charge with an awe-inspiring 50-point performance, shooting a remarkable 72% from the field. His scoring was ably supported by Hawks’ debutant Dave Walsh, who delivered a stellar 20-point, 7-rebound, and 6-assist performance, whilst Jermayne Laing posted 10 points and 6 assists.

Head Coach Mark Mills praised the team’s effort, saying “What a way to start 2024. The guys really stepped up today. Rob’s performance was mesmerizing, but above that, the team rode the rollercoaster of the game well today. That said, I believe there is still so much more to come from this group of players. I am excited to see where we can get to”.

With the victory secured, the West Yorkshire Hawks will enjoy a rest week before returning to their home court, at the University of Huddersfield, on Saturday 20th January for a rematch against Sheffield Elite.
