Hawks Land Six from Summer Tryouts

The West Yorkshire Hawks have unveiled six new signings ahead of the upcoming National League season, following a highly competitive round of summer tryouts. The additions bring a strong mix of returning talent, local promise, international experience, and veteran leadership—perfectly aligning with the club’s ambitions for the season ahead.

Among the standout names is the return of 6’5″ forward Charles Olusunmade. A key part of the Hawks’ roster during the 2023/24 campaign, Olusunmade is back in the Neon and Navy, eager to take on the national stage once again. “I returned to the Hawks because I wanted to challenge myself,” he said. “I’m looking forward to pushing my limits and competing alongside my talented teammates.”

Also joining the ranks is exciting young guard Eddie Uttley, a product of the Deighton junior programme. Uttley makes the move from Calderdale Explorers and brings a deep connection to the local basketball scene. “I want to become the best version of myself on and off the court,” he said. “It’s important that we highlight the basketball talent West Yorkshire has and inspire the youth to take up basketball.”

Adding international flavour to the lineup is Wisdom Otokhagua. The 23-year-old began his basketball journey in Spain as part of the renowned Baskonia programme and most recently played for Leeds LDM. Now, he’s bringing his skills to Huddersfield. “I joined the Hawks because I loved the organisation, its values, and vision,” he said. “I’m very excited to start my first season with the team.”

The Hawks have also welcomed 6’7″ big man Aaron Willey to the squad. Willey, who developed through the Manchester Giants junior system, brings size, strength, and a sense of family, being the son of Hawks’ University of Huddersfield Head Coach, Adrian Willey. “I’m looking forward to playing with such a great team and playing at a higher standard,” he said.

Another Deighton talent stepping up is 24-year-old Tyler Harriott. For Harriott, joining the Hawks is a great move. “I’m really looking forward to representing Huddersfield in the National League,” he said. “I can’t wait for the season to get started.”

Rounding off the new arrivals is experienced forward Anthony Kuczaj, who joins the Hawks from Stockport Falcons. “I’m looking forward to joining the team and playing in front of the amazing crowd here in Huddersfield,” he said. “This is a talented team with a lot of potential. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve this season.”

With pre-season training now well underway, all six players are deep in preparation ahead of the Hawks’ opening fixture of the 2024/25 season—an away clash against Tameside Vikings on Sunday 28th September.
