Hawks Go Close Against Sharks

In a thrilling showdown at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield, the West Yorkshire Hawks faced off with the Sheffield Sharks. The Sharks eventually prevailed in a nail-biting game, securing a 76-73 victory over the battling Hawks.


Entering the game with the Sharks perched atop the league table, the Hawks were determined to challenge them on all fronts. Fresh off a morale-boosting win against Calderdale, the Hawks aimed to upset the standings.


The Sharks set the tempo early, showcasing impeccable shooting prowess that enabled them to establish a 20-15 lead at the close of the first quarter. However, the Hawks showcased their defensive intensity in the second quarter, managing to tie the game at 35-35 heading into halftime.


Witha continued emphasis on the defensive end, the Hawks continued their surge into the third quarter, establishing a slender 3-point lead. Yet, the Sharks, drawing upon the experience of their key players, delivered a strong comeback in the final quarter.


With three minutes remaining, the Sharks took the lead by leaning on their seasoned players. The Hawks, battled all the way to end and almost completed the comeback. However, the Sharks held their ground, sealing the game from the free-throw line as the clock wound down.


Rob Donaldson spearheaded the Hawks’ scoring with an impressive 17 points, complemented by Kesh Jalota’s 12 points and Charles Olusunmade’s contribution of 11 points.


Coach Mills lauded his team’s performance, saying “I know the result is not the one we wanted but this was our best team performance of the season. The guys are buying into the way that we want to play basketball on both ends and it is starting to pay off . A little more composure and confidence and I think we will soon turn these close losses into big wins in 2024. I am already excited to get back on the court and go again “


The Hawks wrapped up their 2023 campaign with this close results and will look to regroup and refocus for the new year. Their first test in 2024 will see them take on a strong Sheffield Elite on Sunday 7th January, seeking to get the year started with a statement win.
