Hawks Deighton's First Final
The West Yorkshire Hawks Deighton women’s team capped off their debut season in the Hawks family with a hard-fought Playoff Final against Leeds Trinity Tigers, falling 68–41 in a spirited battle that reflected just how far the team has come in such a short space of time.
It was the biggest stage of the season, and the Tigers came out firing—leaning heavily on their star power to race to a 13-point lead after the opening quarter. But true to form, the Hawks responded with grit and heart. The second quarter saw Deighton lift their intensity and fight their way into the contest, though Trinity’s sharp execution extended their advantage to 16 at the half.
The third quarter showcased what this Hawks side has become known for—tenacity, togetherness, and that never-say-die mindset. Matching Tigers bucket-for-bucket, the Hawks gave themselves a window for a fourth-quarter surge. But as the clock wound down, the energy reserves ran dry, and Trinity’s consistency proved decisive as they sealed the playoff title.
Vilma Jurgaityte led the Hawks in scoring with 14 points, a fitting performance in a game that summed up the team’s resilience.
Hawks head coach Ula Kostka reflected on the broader success of the season, saying
“Losing a final is always tough to take but looking at the bigger picture, I am proud of the team, not just for today, but for the season they have given the club. We are moving in the right direction and I am already looking forward to next season.”
This playoff final marked the end of a powerful first chapter for Hawks Deighton—one built on belief, commitment, and community. Over the summer, the Hawks will regroup and reset, with exciting plans for expanding the women’s and girls’ programme already in motion for September.
