Hawks Deighton Secure Historic First Win
The West Yorkshire Hawks Deighton women’s team made history with their first-ever victory, defeating Walkley Cottage Arrows 77-52 in their inaugural game at the Hawks Nest at the University of Huddersfield. It was a performance built on grit and defensive intensity.
The Hawks came out of the gates strong, locking down the Arrows’ offense and holding them to just seven points in the opening quarter. Their defensive intensity allowed them to open up a seven-point lead by the end of the first, thanks to a late surge that set the tone for the rest of the game.
The second quarter saw a response from Walkley Cottage Arrows, who came out firing and managed to flip the script, taking a four-point lead midway through the period. But West Yorkshire regained their footing, using a 9-0 run to close out the first half with an eight-point cushion.
In the third quarter, both teams traded buckets as the intensity ramped up, but the Hawks stayed one step ahead, extending their lead to 49-37 by the end of the period. The final quarter was where the Hawks truly shone, pouring in 28 points to blow the game wide open, with the Arrows unable to match their offensive pace.
Leading the scoring for the Hawks was Vilma Jurgaityte, who dropped 19 points, while Ginny Neher added 14, Poppy Townsend chipped in 12, and player-coach Urszula Kostka rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Kostka was pleased with her team’s performance, saying: “It is great to get the team’s first-ever win, especially on our home floor. The team did a great job tonight. They dealt with Arrows’ run in the second quarter well and showed good composure.”
The Hawks now have a few weeks to prepare for their next challenge, a road matchup against the Sheffield Hatters on 12th November.
