Hawks Deighton Pick Up Road Win
The Hawks Deighton women’s team earned a hard-fought 48-52 road win against Sheffield Hatters, marking another crucial step in their season. In a game where defense took center stage early on, both teams opened cautiously, with the Hawks securing a narrow one-point lead by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Hawks’ trio of Urszula Kostka, Ginny Neher, and Rachel Tunnacliffe found their rhythm, breaking through the Hatters’ defense and pushing Deighton to a five-point advantage by halftime. Yet, any thought of a comfortable lead was quickly dashed after the break. The Hatters regrouped with a renewed energy in the third, cutting Hawks’ lead down to just three points, setting up a tense final quarter.
With the game hanging in the balance, Hawks turned to Ginny Neher, who delivered her best performance of the season. Neher lit up the scoreboard, putting up a season-high 33 points, including a clutch, game-sealing 11 points down the stretch that kept the Hatters at bay. Despite the Hatters’ relentless push, Hawks held firm, executing both ends of the floor well enough to leave Sheffield with the win.
After the game, Player-Coach Urszula Kostka praised both the effort of the Hatters and her team’s resilience: “Credit to Hatters—they pushed hard tonight. However, I am proud of the team playing for the full forty minutes. We had a slow start but showed phases of good play, and it also helps when you have a player like Ginny just have such a huge game.”
Next up, the Hawks Deighton head back on the road to face City of Leeds on the 8th December at Leeds Beckett University. This crucial matchup will be another test of their road form as they continue to battle in league play.
