Hawks Deighton Fall Short in Season Opener
The West Yorkshire Hawks Deighton women’s team faced a tough test in their first-ever game on the road against last season’s league champions, Trinity Tigers, at Trinity University in Leeds. The Tigers came out firing, knocking down threes early and building a quick lead while the Hawks worked to find their rhythm. Despite the challenging start, the Hawks locked down defensively in the second quarter, holding the usually high-scoring Tigers to just 2 points, trimming the deficit to just 5 at halftime.
The momentum stayed with the Hawks as they continued to push hard in the third quarter, closing the gap to just 2 points heading into the final period. However, the Tigers regained their offensive composure in the final quarter, pulling away for a 46-35 victory.
Ginny Neher led the Hawks in scoring with 10 points, while Vilma Jurgaityte added 6 points and Urszula Kostka contributed 5.
Player Coach Urszula Kostka reflected on the game: “For our first outing, I’m proud of the way we fought back and showed resilience. We will continue to learn with every game, and I’m confident we’ll keep improving.”
The Hawks will be back in action on Wednesday, 16th October, with their first-ever home game at the University of Huddersfield. Tip-off is at 8:15pm, and entrance is free for Hawks fans.
