Hawks Continue Perfect Start To 2024
In a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the West Yorkshire Hawks emerged triumphant against the Sheffield Elite, securing a 66-54 win.
The Hawks wasted no time asserting their dominance early, racing to a commanding 30-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. Flawless execution of their game plan and a display of offensive firepower left the Elite looking for a way back into the game.
Sheffield Elite, however, refused to be written off. They regrouped during the break and delivered a gritty defensive performance in the second quarter, limiting the Hawks to just 10 points. The Elite’s steely resolve narrowed the gap to 40-30 at the half, setting the stage for a potential comeback.
The third quarter unfolded as a closely contested battle, with both teams trading baskets. Elite continued to grow into the game, reducing the deficit to a just 7 points heading into the final quarter.
Experience proved to be the deciding factor in the fourth quarter, as the Hawks regained control of the game. Their intensified defensive efforts held Elite to just 7 points in the final 10 minutes, securing a decisive 66-54 victory. The Hawks’ resilience sealed the win, marking their first back-to-back wins of the season.
Head Coach Mark Mills was pleased in his post-game remarks, stating, “Well, that was a rollercoaster of a game. The guys came out strong and executed our game plan perfectly in the first quarter. The issues came when we strayed from that plan, but credit to Elite; they showed some real heart fighting their way back into that one. There were plenty of lessons for us to take from today’s game, and we are already looking forward to next weekend.”
Dave Walsh had an impressive home debut leading the scoring charge with an impressive 28 points, while Chris Sibbett contributed 13 points, solidifying their crucial roles in securing the Hawks’ victory.
With the momentum from this thrilling win, the Hawks are set to hit the road next Saturday, facing off against City of Leeds. As they strive to extend their perfect start to 2024.
