Hawks Clinch Playoff Spot
West Yorkshire Hawks made history on Saturday night, securing their highest-ever league finish and a first-ever playoff berth with a dominant 91-59 win over Cheshire Wire. The win, in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Hawks Nest, capped off a memorable regular season and underlined the team’s championship ambitions.
Fueled by the energy of their home fans, the Hawks came out flying, setting the tone with relentless defensive pressure. They held Wire to just eight first-quarter points while Dave Walsh got rolling early with 10 points of his own, helping the Hawks build an 11-point cushion after 10 minutes. The defensive intensity continued into the second quarter as the Hawks’ high-energy play frustrated Wire’s offense. By halftime, the lead had stretched to 39-19, putting the hosts firmly in control.
Wire showed some fight in the third, taking advantage of a slight defensive dip from the Hawks to put up 19 points in the period. But the Hawks’ offensive firepower remained unstoppable, with Charles Andrews dominating inside to help extend the lead. The final quarter followed a similar pattern—Wire found more success offensively, but they simply couldn’t contain the Hawks’ balanced attack. With contributions coming from across the roster, the Hawks closed out the regular season in emphatic fashion, securing a 32-point victory.
Dave Walsh led the scoring with 22 points, while Charles Andrews added 14, Jacques Misambu finished with 13, and Hassan Haq chipped in 12. After the game, Hawks Head Coach Danny Byrne reflected on the milestone moment, saying “It was a great way to close out the regular season in front of our amazing fans. The guys are really locked in and excited to make a push in the playoffs.”
The Hawks will now wait to see who they will face in their historic first-ever playoff appearance, with the matchup set for the weekend of the 5th or 6th April.
