Growth Continues for Hawks Women
The scoreboard may not tell the full story, but Saturday’s clash with the league leaders was another important chapter in the West Yorkshire Hawks Women’s first-ever NBL campaign.
Facing what is widely regarded as one of the elite sides in the division, and a team strongly tipped to lift the title this year, the Neon and Navy stepped onto the floor ready to test themselves against the very best. And while the final score read 39–97, the performance once again highlighted the growth, resilience and learning that have defined this inaugural season.
Milton Keynes started strongly with a well-balanced offensive threat and relentless defensive pressure, opening up a 14-point lead by the end of the first quarter. The Hawks absorbed the challenge and responded with determination.
The second quarter saw a more aggressive and assertive Hawks side. Attacking the basket with greater intent and confidence, the team found moments of momentum and showed the fight that has become a hallmark of this group. Despite that improved intensity, the visitors’ depth and consistency allowed them to extend their advantage, heading into the halftime break with a 22–44 lead.
Both teams returned to the court after the interval determined to compete. The Hawks battled hard in the early stages of the third quarter, but the Breakers continued to execute at a high level, stretching their lead to 31 points heading into the final period.
Fatigue inevitably began to show in the fourth quarter against such a polished opponent, but what never faded was the Hawks’ spirit. There was no stepping back, no letting up, just continued effort, teamwork and resilience right through to the final buzzer.
Olga Torres led the Hawks scoring with 10 points, setting the tone with her work rate and willingness to attack.
This campaign has always been about more than results. In their first season competing in the NBL, every game has provided invaluable experience and this fixture was no different. Competing against one of the division’s strongest sides offers lessons that cannot be replicated in training. The Hawks Women continue to build, adapt and grow together, and that progress is what will carry this group forward.
The Hawks now turn their attention to their final game of the season next Saturday against the North Herts Knights at the Hawks Nest, University of Huddersfield.
