Defense Delivers for Hawks Deighton

West Yorkshire Hawks Deighton women’s team delivered a strong defensive performance to claim a hard-fought 55-45 victory over Sheffield Hatters at the Hawks Nest, University of Huddersfield.

The game opened at a lively pace, with both teams finding early offensive rhythm. The Hawks showcased a well-balanced offense, with five different players getting on the scoreboard in the first quarter. However, the Hatters edged ahead, taking a narrow one-point lead into the break.

The second quarter proved decisive as the Hawks ramped up the defensive intensity, holding Sheffield to just six points. That lockdown effort, combined with sharp execution on the offensive end, allowed the home side to take control and head into halftime with a 31-21 lead.

Sheffield responded well after the break, rediscovering their offensive flow in the third quarter. But the Hawks had an answer from beyond the arc, drilling four three-pointers to keep the pressure on and stretch their lead to 14 heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter turned into a battle of endurance, with both teams digging deep. The Hatters mounted a late push, trimming the deficit, but the Hawks remained composed down the stretch to close out an important home victory.

Vilma Jurgaityte led the scoring for the Hawks with 19 points, while Rachel Tunnacliffe provided a valuable contribution with 10.

Reflecting on the performance, Hawks head coach Urszula Kostka praised her team’s defensive, saying “This was always going to be a difficult game, especially as Hatters got off to a good start. I’m pleased with how the team raised the bar defensively in the second quarter, and that gave us control. It’s great to get another win under our belts, and we will keep pushing.”

Hawks Deighton will be back in action at home next week, facing a tough challenge against league-leading Leeds Trinity Tigers.
