Blistering Start Propels Hawks To Win

West Yorkshire Hawks tipped off their 2024/25 NBL Division 3 campaign with a commanding 86-69 victory over Stockport Falcons at St Anne’s RC Voluntary Academy. The Hawks wasted no time in asserting their themselves, racing out to a blistering start that set the tone for the game.

From the opening tip, the Hawks caught the Falcons off guard, particularly offensively. In a scintillating first quarter, the Hawks poured in 38 points, putting on a clinic in ball movement and scoring efficiency. Stockport struggled to gaim a foothold in the game, finding themselves down 20-38 after just ten minutes of play.

Falcons, however, showed resilience and regrouped in the second quarter. Their increased defensive intensity and physicality forced the Hawks into tougher looks and limited their offensive output. Heading into the half, Stockport had managed to hold the deficit to 18 points.

In the second half, Stockport continued their efforts on the glass, crashing the boards with purpose, but it wasn’t enough to derail the Hawks’ momentum. The visitors maintained their composure, finding ways to manage the game and sustain a comfortable lead. Despite the Falcons’ hard work, West Yorkshire’s early dominance proved decisive as they cruised to a 19-point win.

Head coach Danny Byrne praised his team’s performance: “It was a good performance to start the season. We dominated the early stages and that really decided the game. There is still plenty for us to work on, but our potential is there for all to see.”

Chris Jackman led the way for the Hawks with 23 points, while Rob Donaldson added 20, and Dave Walsh contributed 18 in a balanced scoring effort.

With this season-opening win in the bag, the Hawks now turn their attention to the National Cup. Their second-round game is set for this Sunday at the Hawks Nest at the University of Huddersfield, tipping off at 5pm.
